The scene: Royals/Rangers, bottom of the ninth, tie game situation, runner at first with two outs. Elvis Andrus hits the ball into right field, and Mitch Maier fires a relay throw to home plate. Brayan Pena gets the ball in plenty of time, but - he backs up. Mike Napoli slides under the tag. Rangers walk-off.
This just really fascinates me as a baseball fan. With all of the talk surrounding Buster Posey’s injury and plays at the plate, I’ve seen people wonder if Posey’s injury had any impact on Pena at all. As you can see, he clearly does have a foot protecting the plate but moves it out of the way when Napoli comes charging in. Whether Posey’s injury was lingering in the back of Pena’s mind or not, it provides 1) an excellent back drop and 2) provoking conversation. And any play that gets an “Oh my god” out of me as I’m watching deserves a gif/post.
…it’s gonna be hard without him.
This is sad day. Get well soon, Buster.
