Re: All-Star voting.
I would never argue against anyone who chooses to solely vote for the players on their team(s). That’s understandable. Heck, I’m sure it’s expected and even encouraged. I attended a White Sox game on the very first day of All-Star voting, and they had a little event on the field encouraging everyone to vote for every White Sox player - hey, when Southpaw is punching in Brent Morel for third base All-Star, you know it’s the best display of homerism.
That being said, I hope that some people don’t necessarily just punch in their team all the time. When I vote, I always try to vote who I think deserves the spot the most, and I ignore the uniform. I’ll vote for guys I don’t even like or play on teams I despise, but - hey, if they have the numbers, they deserve to go. I’ll vote.
For someone who loves my baseball team, I sure do insult them a lot.
"No baseball fan has to explain his mania to any other baseball fan. They are a fraternity. It is less easy, often it is hopeless, to try to explain it to anyone else. You grow technical, and you do not make sense. You grow sentimental, and you are deemed soft in the head. How, the benighted outsider asks you with no little condescension, can you grow sentimental about a cold-blooded professional sport?"
